Nikki Haley, a former governor of South Carolina and US ambassador to the United Nations, made her nomination for the 2024 Republican presidential nominee on Tuesday.
But the primary is still in its infancy. It may require months for the field to be fully round before applicants visit states like Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina which will kick off the GOP's nominating process.
Haley could stay independent for weeks or even months as the only rival to former president Donald Trump.
Former president Donald Trump first announced his candidacy in November, after the 2018 midterm elections. He frequently held campaign-style rallies before and after the 2020 presidential election and never dropped out of sight.
On Tuesday, Nikki Haley launched her presidential campaign. It was a break from her insistence that she would never give up on Donald Trump. "It's a new generation of leaders to re-establish financial responsibility, protect our borders, and elevate our country, our pride, and our purpose."

Glenn Youngkin's victory in the Virginia gubernatorial election provided Republicans with a new playbook emphasizing parental power in public education. His political travels, which took young Republican candidates to several states without warning last year, show Youngkin has aspirations beyond Virginia. He was impeded in his effort to pass a 15-week abortion ban when Democrats were elected to a state senate special election this year, expanding their narrow majority.
Chris Sununu recently established the New Hampshire Governor's Accountability PAC, which appropriated the state's motto, "Live Free or Die." He is seen as a strong Trump opponent and alternative within the Republican Party and has the advantage of being widely known in early-voting New Hampshire. He would also gain an advantage from being a universally recognized candidate. American politicians are looking for action-oriented and decisive politicians, calling balls and strikes as they see them and being super transparent.
